A DOLLAR A DAY: THE CCC AT DEVIL’S DEN
Devil’s Den State Park Visitor’s Center
11333 West Arkansas Highway 74 in West Fork
Friday, January 17, 4-5 p.m.
The Great Depression of the 1930s, which saw over 35 percent of American workers jobless and millions of others homeless or underemployed, changed the United States in ways big and small. The Works Progress Administration, spearheaded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, sought to ease the suffering of out-of-work Americans through a variety of programs that gave hardworking people homes, food, jobs and a sense of purpose. In Arkansas, one of the most important WPA programs was the Civilian Conservation Corps, which recruited young men to live and work on public projects. The CCC carved many of the Arkansas State Parks we still enjoy today out of the trackless wilderness, building roads, dams, bridges, cabins, lakes and shelters. That includes many of the structures still in use at Devil’s Den State Park, which was built by the CCC in 1932. In this event, join park interpreters for a special discussion of the construction of Devil’s Den State Park, including a video that
explains the creation of the CCC and program’s work all over America. The event is free. For more information, call the park at: (479)761-3325

Chevy Suburban awarded honorary star near famous Hollywood ‘Walk of Fame’
Since all the way back in 1936, the Chevrolet Suburban has been playing a starring role in American lives, helping families do more with a great mix of comfort, capability, style and power. In the process, Chevy Suburbans have made their way into TV and film as well. First appearing in a Hollywood feature film in 1952, Chevy Suburbans have since appeared on the big and small screen 1,750 times, from the iconic burgundy ‘Burb driven for several seasons by mob boss Tony Soprano to the long lines of black Suburbans that have ferried fictional presidents and world leaders in dozens of films.
Recently the Chevy Suburban was recognized for its 67-year place in Hollywood history, with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce presenting the iconic SUV an honorary star at the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex, just steps from Hollywood Boulevard and the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“For six decades the Chevrolet Suburban has been Hollywood’s longest-working actor,” said Rana Ghadban, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “Appearing in classic feature films and on must-see television shows, the Suburban is a well-established industry mainstay. With the Chevrolet Tahoe also making an impact in movies and on television, it’s impressive to have both vehicles now join an illustrious group of actors and characters that are forever known as Hollywood legends.”
Over the years, the refined style and chiseled looks of the Chevy Suburban have allowed it to play a multitude of roles, from kid-friendly transport in family films to hauling villains around in sinister blackout trim to ferrying superheroes in disguise. The confident and refined look of the Suburban makes it a movie vehicle like no other, while its cargo room and towing capacity means it is also often serves behind the scenes.
“There’s really nothing else like the Chevrolet Suburban in this business, for two reasons,” said Dennis McCarthy, Hollywood picture car coordinator. “First, it’s one of the most versatile vehicles in the business, able to fit with any type of character. Second, it can help instantly give a scene added importance. When a convoy of black Suburbans appears on screen, you know that’s not the time to leave your seat to buy popcorn.”
“This is a great example of how life and art influence each other,” said Tim Kozub, design manager for the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe which will be unveiled later this month. “The popularity of Suburban and Tahoe in film was first inspired by the real-life roles they played in the military, in law enforcement and family trips around the world. Today, their role in Hollywood inspired the design of the all-new models, as we integrated the sense of capability, action, and importance associated with Suburban and Tahoe on screen.”
You don’t have to be a Hollywood superstar to experience the comfort, capability and show-stopping design of the iconic Chevrolet Suburban. Four must-see Christmas movies
Four must-see Christmas movies
Here at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet of Springdale, if there’s anything we love more than going to the movies, it’s gotta be Christmas! Put them together, and you’ve got a match made in sugarplum heaven. December is the perfect time to pop some popcorn, put on a great Christmas movie and settle in with the ones you love for some holiday cheer on the small screen. Seen below, check out four of our favorite holiday films. Any one of them is a great experience that will help get you into the Christmas spirit. And if you need a beautiful new Chevrolet to get you to the drive-in next year, stop in today at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet of Springdale for a test drive, or check our full selection at our website right now.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1992)
Halloween is second only to Christmas on our holiday hierarchy, so we find a lot to love in this stop-motion Christmas-Halloween crossover tale about hero Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, as and his spooky friends works to save Christmas and foil a plot to kidnap Santa Claus by a few of the dastardly villains. Conceived and produced by the legendary Tim Burton (though not, as many mistakenly believe, directed by Burton, who handed off those duties to Henry Selick), the result is a lush and beautiful vision of holidays colliding, with plenty to delight adults and kids alike.
Die Hard (1988)
Though it was originally released in balmy July and doesn’t focus exclusively on Christmas, we’re firmly in the camp of those who believe director John McTiernan’s “Die Hard” is a “Christmas movie.” It’s a Christmas visit with his family, after all, that brings hard-boiled New York cop John McLane (iconically portrayed by Bruce Willis) to L.A., and a corporate Christmas party that gets taken over by a gang of thieves led by the villainous Hans (the late Alan Rickman, in another great performance). The movie that launched an entire genre of “trapped hero” flicks, not to mention the billion dollar “Die Hard” franchise, this action-packed story of a lone savior taking on ruthless mercenaries is one of the best movies of the 1980s, not to mention a great Christmas movie with real heart. That’s our take, and we’re sticking to it.
The Polar Express (2004)
Back in 2004, director Robert Zemeckis and star Tom Hanks took one of the most beautiful children’s books of all time and turned it into a delight for the senses: “The Polar Express.” A computer-animated film that’s bound to restore even the most small-hearted Grinch’s Christmas spirit, it’s the tale of a boy whose faith in Santa is shaken until a mysterious train bound for the North Pole magically makes a stop in the street in front of his house on Christmas Eve. Building hugely on the bare-bones story of the book, the film goes from there to high adventure, with beautiful sights to behold. Though the now-15 year old motion-capture animation isn’t quite up to 2019 standards, the story is still very magical and Hanks’ performance as several crucial characters shows why he has plenty of Oscars to kick around.
Elf (2003)
Comedian and actor Will Ferrell is a national treasure, and a huge part of the proof of that is on display in 2003’s “Elf,” which took the story of an unlikely hero and turned it into an instant classic that will probably be a holiday favorite as long as films exist. It’s the story of Buddy, who was taken in as an orphan by one of Santa’s elf toymakers at the North Pole and raised to adulthood never knowing his background. Once he reaches adulthood, his adoptive father tells him the truth and at that point, Buddy sets off to New York City in search of his birthparents, setting up both a hilarious holiday comedy and one of the best fish-out-of-water tales in cinema history. More than just a one-trick gimmick film, “Elf” is a flick with real, true heart that’s about finding the joy of where you are. That makes it one of the must-sees around here every Christmas season.
Home is where the heart is, and at Christmastime, one of the best things you can do with your family is watch a great holiday film. Any of the four films seen above will help you spend a few hours with someone you love as you wait for Santa’s sleigh. And if you need a hot new sleigh of your own, stop in today at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet and check out our big selection of beautiful new Chevrolet cars, trucks and SUVs. Chevy unveils the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Colorado
We’ve got gasoline in our veins when it comes to vehicles around here at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet of Springdale, and that’s especially true when it comes to our beloved Chevys. Given that, we always look forward to the unveiling of the latest models. This month brings a big update to one of our favorites, with Chevrolet releasing details on the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Colorado. Featuring more character, more color choices and more attitude than ever before, the 2021 Colorado is sure to make a splash when it rolls onto the McLarty Daniel Chevrolet lot next year.
An engineering and design upgrade of the best-looking midsize truck on the road, the 2021 Chevy Colorado will officially make its public debut at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas, with a pre-production prototype of the 2021 Colorado ZR2 4×4 on display.
Following what has been a trend at Chevrolet in recent years, the 2021 Colorado will feature more differentiation between trim levels, with the exclusive Sand Dune Metallic exterior paint color available on 2021 Colorado Z71 and ZR2 models. All trim groups will receive a revised Chevy bowtie emblem up front, and bold, stamped-in “CHEVROLET” embossing on the tailgate.
WT, LT and Z71 Colorado models will benefit from an updated grille and lower front fascia, with WT and LT models getting all-new gilded Chevy Bowties. The bowtie on the off-road Z71 models, meanwhile, will be sinister black, while all 4×4 models will be fitted with front skid plates to protect steering components.
The Colorado ZR2 4×4 gets an aggression boost to match its unmatched off-road capability, with an exclusive stencil-style cutout “CHEVROLET” grille, along with exclusive Multimatic DSSV position-sensitive dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, a factory two-inch lift, a 3.5-inch wider track, cab-protecting rock rails, cast iron control arms, multiple skid plates, and the rugged Autotrac transfer case.
“We’ve sold 520,000 Colorado pickups in five years through a relentless, foot-on-the-gas approach to product and feature updates,” said Bob Krapes, director of marketing, Chevrolet Trucks. “With its new-look front end and tailgate, Colorado will now have a more aggressive appearance to match its award-winning capability.”
The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado will go on sale in 2021, with all Colorado models proudly made in the USA at GM’s Wentzville Assembly Center in Wentzville Missouri.

Chevrolet debuts 450 hp, all-electric ‘E-10’ 1962 Chevy truck at SEMA
While we all love the sound of a rumbling Chevy V8, the future belongs to alternative-fueled vehicles and electric cars. With a bold new custom vehicle appearing this month at SEMA, Chevy proves that electrified future doesn’t have to mean settling for bland, boring trucks, SUVs and cars.
Called the E-10 Concept, the truck started as a stock 1962 Chevrolet pickup. Heavily modified in every way possible, the heart of the E-10 is a prototype “electric crate engine,” powered by readily-available battery packs from the Chevy Volt and producing big horsepower. Called “Connect & Cruise,” the electric engine package is a glimpse of future commercial offerings Chevrolet hopes to someday sell to customers looking to convert their gasoline vehicles to all-electric power, allowing you to blend the cool styling of yesterday with the cutting-edge propulsion of today.
“The Chevrolet E-10 electrified Connect & Cruise concept system reimagines the performance crate engine for hot rodders,” said Jim Campbell, vice president of Performance and Motorsports. “As General Motors continues to work toward our vision of a zero-emissions world, concepts such as this help us get there, while still supporting the enthusiasts who love to drive vintage vehicles.”
The E-10’s Connect & Cruise powerplant consists of two electric crate motors from Chevrolet Performance that replace the truck’s original V8, along with two 400-volt batteries hidden beneath the truck’s custom tonneau cover. Backed by a production-model Chevrolet SuperMatic automatic transmission, the engine delivers a dyno-tested 450 horsepower to the rear wheels, allowing the E-10 to rocket from zero-to-60 in just five seconds, while running the quarter mile in the high 13-second range — enough to hang with a 2020 Chevy Camaro SS on the drag strip.
“General Motors has the in-house talent required to create a concept like the E-10,” said Campbell. “With the innovative thinking and expertise our performance team, electrification team and many others at GM bring, this project went from concept to running vehicle in 18 weeks to demonstrate what the future of an eCrate propulsion system and hot rodding could look like.”
To make sure the E-10 had that throaty, hot rod growl, the truck includes three speakers that emulate the sound of a V8 engine, with the difference being that you can choose between various engine sounds including the LS7 Z28 Camaro with track tuning, LS7 Z28 touring turning, a futuristic sound or silent. When turned on, the engine sounds will automatically adjust when the transmission shifts, mimicking exactly the sound of a gasoline powered vehicle.
“The E-10 Concept builds on the experience and momentum generated by last year’s eCOPO Concept, taking the idea of a ‘crate’ electric propulsion system further by leveraging actual production components,” said Russ O’Blenes, director of Performance Variants, Parts & Motorsports. “It’s all still in the testing stage, but this concept brings the electric option for hot rodders much closer to reality.”
In contrast to its next-gen power, the exterior of the E-10 goes Old School Hot Rod Cool, accentuating the classic looks of the C-10 pickup with custom modifications galore, a lowered stance, 20-inch alloy wheels up front and 22-inch wheels in back. Inside, the original interior has been upgraded with a digital display and leather-trimmed seats.
Whether you’re looking to buy an all-electric vehicle in the future or not, you’ve got to admit that the C-10 is pretty awesome, not to mention a display of all the ingenuity and creativity that makes the custom car world so great. Ready to experience that same creativity in your daily drive? Then stop in today at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet for a test drive of a great 2020 Chevrolet vehicle, including the all-electric Chevrolet Volt. Or you can check out our full selection online right now at our website.
Chevy confirms: 2020 Corvette is fastest base-model ‘Vette ever made
Chevrolet knew they were taking a big gamble when they decided to make the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray the first mid-engine production ‘Vette since the model debuted way back in 1953. That gamble is now paying off not only in groundbreaking style, but also in performance, with Chevy announcing that the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is officially the fastest Corvette ever made, with even base Corvette Stingray models rocketing from zero to 60 in three seconds, and thundering through the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at a top speed of 123 miles per hour. Performance is even better with the available Z51 package, which shaves a tenth off the zero to 60 time.
“The performance of the 2020 Stingray has far exceeded our expectations,” said Alex MacDonald, Chevrolet vehicle performance manager. “Moving more weight over the rear wheels helps us get off the line quicker, but it’s the integration between the powertrain and chassis that really takes the performance to new levels.”
The secret to the 2020 Corvette’s performance success largely boils down to the better weight balance of the mid-engine configuration, coupled with the 2020 Stingray’s standard 6.2-liter LT2 small-block V8. Even though it is naturally aspirated, the next-generation LT2 churns out a certified 495 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, making the 2020 the most powerful base model Corvette in Chevrolet history.
“The LT2 is one of our best efforts yet in Corvette’s history of naturally aspirated high performance Small Block V-8 engines,” said Jordan Lee, GM’s global Chief Engineer of Small Block engines. “This engine is incredibly powerful and responsive. Power is readily available when the driver needs it.”
Built for the harshest high-performance duty, the engine includes track-ready features like a standard dry-sump oiling system with three scavenger pumps and a low-profile die cast oil pan with integrated filter and high-capacity oil cooler, allowing for great lubrication even when performing 1g turns. Backing that incredible engine is Chevrolet’s first eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic, developed in cooperation with high performance supplier Tremec.
“The goal from the beginning was to design a transmission worthy of an exotic supercar that is fun to drive everyday,” said Terri Schulke, GM global chief engineer of transmissions. “We achieved that goal by combining the best attributes of the LT2 and the DCT, and I think the impressive performance numbers speak for themselves.”
Everybody here at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet of Springdale is just itching to get our hands on the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette, and we know our friends in the Northwest Arkansas Corvette Club are too! Chevy debuts the new 2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible, with model-first retractable hardtop
Chevy debuts the new 2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible, with model-first retractable hardtop
Chevrolet stunned the auto industry last year with the surprise announcement that the eighth-gen Chevy Corvette would be mid-engined, and the brand just keeps rolling out surprises related to their flagship performance car. The latest is the word that the 2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible will feature an innovative retractable hardtop with virtually no aerodynamic and performance tradeoffs when compared to the Stingray Coupe. Utilizing six electric motors for operation, the folding top conceals cleanly inside the body structure and looks amazing from any angle whether up or down.
McLarty Daniel Chevrolet of Springdale is your Chevy Corvette Superstore in Northwest Arkansas, and we’ve got all the details on this gorgeous new drop-top ‘Vette, so read on!
Since GM announced the 2020 Corvette would be mid-engined, they’ve said that from a design standpoint, the C8 would be “engineered first and foremost as a convertible.” With that in mind, the Corvette team engineered the Stingray roadster’s hardtop to stow seamlessly into the body for an incredible look, without sacrificing storage. In a release about the new convertible, Chevrolet said that the 2020 Stingray Convertible has the ability to store two full golf club bags in the rear trunk, with the top up or down, in addition to enough storage for an airline-spec carry-on bag and laptop bag in the “frunk” up front. When compared to a cloth soft-top, the folding hardtop provides a quieter cabin and cleaner look, while also being more secure.
Inspired by jets
“Our goal from the beginning was to make sure customers didn’t have to sacrifice any functionality, performance or comfort when choosing the hardtop convertible,” said Josh Holder, Corvette program engineering manager. “We managed to keep the same design theme as the coupe, as well as the exceptional storage capacity and track capability.”
The design of the Stingray roadster was inspired by the latest generation of fighter jets, including the tonneau cover behind the driver and passenger’s seats, which features shaped nacelles designed to reduce wind noise and turbulence inside the passenger compartment with the top down. Operated with six electric motors for efficiency, speed and maintenance-free operation, the two-piece folding hardtop can fully retract in under 15 seconds at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. A body color roof is standard for a clean look. For a more performance vibe, GM also offers a metallic Carbon Flash roof as an option.
Given the rear-engine configuration, careful planning was required to make sure the high-performance V8 could both breathe and avoid overheating when the top was stored under the flip-up tonneau cover. A sheet-molded composite top made from lightweight panels features heat shields to help divert and manage engine heat. The glass in the roof has also been optimized for maximum noise reduction, while the roadster includes the same rear spoiler from the C8 Z51 Performance Package. In wind tunnel testing, the result was an identical drag coefficient when comparing the 2020 Coupe and the 2020 Roadster with the top up. Engineers also slightly changed the convertible’s chassis, tuning dampers and springs to provide almost identical performance between the coup and convertible.
GM’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky will begin production of the 2020 Chevrolet Stingray Coupe in late 2019, with the convertible going into production in early 2020. Ready to get in the driver’s seat of the first mid-engine ‘Vette convertible? Then stop in today at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet, talk to one of our friendly finance professionals, and let’s get the paperwork started!
Three Purportedly Haunted Places You Can Visit in Northwest Arkansas
It’s October again, and in addition to cooler weather, spooky old movies on TV, and great nights in the stands at a hometown football game, that means it’s almost time for Halloween! The night of spooks, witches and specters always gets us in the… spirit (heh-heh-heh) here at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet of Springdale, encouraging us to recall some of the spooky tales of Northwest Arkansas we heard around the campfire as kids or on the internet as ghost-curious adults. Seen below, check out four purportedly haunted places you can visit right here in Northwest Arkansas. And if you need a great new or used vehicle to get you there, you’ll get only treats and no tricks from your friends in the car business here at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet! Have a safe and happy Halloween!
The Basin Park Hotel
12 Spring Street, Eureka Springs
When it comes to a town that definitely looks like a place where spooks, specters and all manner of ghosties would hang out, Eureka Springs definitely fits the bill. Of the many spooky stories to be had in Eureka, the big hotels there have caught more than their share of ghostly tales, and that includes the Basin Park Hotel, located right in the thumping heart of town on Spring Street. Built in 1905, the Basin Park’s reputation as a haunted locale often plays second-fiddle to that of its sister hotel up the hill, the Crescent Hotel. But there’s plenty of lore surrounding the Basin Park as well, including regular sightings of the hotel’s resident ghost, Duncan, who appears as a man in a dapper brown suit and old-fashioned derby hat. Another spirit that is purportedly glimpsed at the Basin Park is that of a young bride in a flowing white wedding gown, who is sometimes seen at the Basin Park’s top-floor ballroom. Visitors sometimes also report other ghostly apparitions,
including a spectral African Lion(!) roaming the halls, and the sound of ringing slot machines echoing from the hotel’s distant and nefarious past as an illegal casino.
Clayton House
514 N. 6th Street, Fort Smith
One of Fort Smith’s most opulent Victorian homes and a jewel of the city’s Belle Grove Historic District, the Clayton House was originally constructed in the early 1880s as a residence for the family of prominent local resident William Henry Harrison Clayton, who served as chief prosecutor in the court of Fort Smith’s famous “Hanging Judge,” Isaac Parker. Whether it’s due to the lingering presence of the Clayton family or some of the upset spirits of those outlaws Clayton helped send to Judge Parker’s busy gallows is unclear, but visitors to the Clayton House have reported all manner of paranormal experiences over the years, including hearing the sounds of stomping boots and slamming doors from the second floor when no (living) person was upstairs. William Clayton’s personal study is also apparently a hotbed of ghostly activity according to witnesses, who have reported sightings of a gray-haired older woman in a brown Victorian dress. Now fully restored to the way it appeared
when Clayton and his family lived there, the house is operated through the Fort Smith Heritage Foundation and is available for rental.
Pea Ridge National Military Park
15930 E Hwy 62, Garfield
From Gettysburg to Vicksburg, Civil War Battlefields have long been seen as paranormal hotspots, which is probably understandable given the amount of suffering and death that happened there. While it wasn’t the biggest battle fought in the Civil War, the Battle of Pea Ridge may have been one of its most consequential. Fought on March 7-8, 1862, the battle saw over 23,000 soldiers clash in the hilly pastureland of Northwest Arkansas in a conflict which historians agree was a turning point on the war’s Western front. Today, the 4,300-acre battlefield is considered one of the most intact in the nation, and – if numerous witnesses are to be believed – that includes some of the 3,400 combatants who lost their lives there and possibly still linger there over a century after the muskets and cannons were stilled. Over the years, visitors have reported the sound of cannon fire and musket volleys in the night, along with the distant shouting of vast numbers of spectral soldiers.
