Chevy confirms: 2020 Corvette is fastest base-model 'Vette ever made Chevrolet knew they were taking a big gamble when they decided to make the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray the first mid-engine production 'Vette since the model debuted way back in 1953. That gamble is now paying off not only in groundbreaking style, but also in performance, with Chevy announcing that the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is officially the fastest Corvette ever made, with even base Corvette Stingray models rocketing from zero to 60 in three seconds, and thundering through the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at a top speed of 123 miles per hour. Performance is even better with the available Z51 package, which shaves a tenth off the zero to 60 time. "The performance of the 2020 Stingray has far exceeded our expectations," said Alex MacDonald, Chevrolet vehicle performance manager. "Moving more weight over the rear wheels helps us get off the line quicker, but it's the integration between the powertrain and chassis that really takes the performance to new levels." The secret to the 2020 Corvette's performance success largely boils down to the better weight balance of the mid-engine configuration, coupled with the 2020 Stingray's standard 6.2-liter LT2 small-block V8. Even though it is naturally aspirated, the next-generation LT2 churns out a certified 495 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, making the 2020 the most powerful base model Corvette in Chevrolet history. "The LT2 is one of our best efforts yet in Corvette's history of naturally aspirated high performance Small Block V-8 engines," said Jordan Lee, GM's global Chief Engineer of Small Block engines. "This engine is incredibly powerful and responsive. Power is readily available when the driver needs it." Built for the harshest high-performance duty, the engine includes track-ready features like a standard dry-sump oiling system with three scavenger pumps and a low-profile die cast oil pan with integrated filter and high-capacity oil cooler, allowing for great lubrication even when performing 1g turns. Backing that incredible engine is Chevrolet's first eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic, developed in cooperation with high performance supplier Tremec. "The goal from the beginning was to design a transmission worthy of an exotic supercar that is fun to drive everyday," said Terri Schulke, GM global chief engineer of transmissions. "We achieved that goal by combining the best attributes of the LT2 and the DCT, and I think the impressive performance numbers speak for themselves." Chevy debuts the new 2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible, with model-first retractable hardtop Chevrolet stunned the auto industry last year with the surprise announcement that the eighth-gen Chevy Corvette would be mid-engined, and the brand just keeps rolling out surprises related to their flagship performance car. The latest is the word that the 2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible will feature an innovative retractable hardtop with virtually no aerodynamic and performance tradeoffs when compared to the Stingray Coupe. Utilizing six electric motors for operation, the folding top conceals cleanly inside the body structure and looks amazing from any angle whether up or down. Since GM announced the 2020 Corvette would be mid-engined, they've said that from a design standpoint, the C8 would be "engineered first and foremost as a convertible." Operated with six electric motors for efficiency, speed and maintenance-free operation, the two-piece folding hardtop can fully retract in under 15 seconds at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. A body color roof is standard for a clean look. For a more performance vibe, GM also offers a metallic Carbon Flash roof as an option. Given the rear-engine configuration, careful planning was required to make sure the high-performance V8 could both breathe and avoid overheating when the top was stored under the flip-up tonneau cover. A sheet-molded composite top made from lightweight panels features heat shields to help divert and manage engine heat. The glass in the roof has also been optimized for maximum noise reduction, while the roadster includes the same rear spoiler from the C8 Z51 Performance Package. In wind tunnel testing, the result was an identical drag coefficient when comparing the 2020 Coupe and the 2020 Roadster with the top up. Engineers also slightly changed the convertible's chassis, tuning dampers and springs to provide almost identical performance between the coup and convertible. GM's Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky will begin production of the 2020 Chevrolet Stingray Coupe in late 2019, with the convertible going into production in early 2020. The Basin Park Hotel 12 Spring Street, Eureka Springs When it comes to a town that definitely looks like a place where spooks, specters and all manner of ghosties would hang out, Eureka Springs definitely fits the bill. Of the many spooky stories to be had in Eureka, the big hotels there have caught more than their share of ghostly tales, and that includes the Basin Park Hotel, located right in the thumping heart of town on Spring Street. Built in 1905, the Basin Park's reputation as a haunted locale often plays second-fiddle to that of its sister hotel up the hill, the Crescent Hotel. But there's plenty of lore surrounding the Basin Park as well, including regular sightings of the hotel's resident ghost, Duncan, who appears as a man in a dapper brown suit and old-fashioned derby hat. Another spirit that is purportedly glimpsed at the Basin Park is that of a young bride in a flowing white wedding gown, who is sometimes seen at the Basin Park's top-floor ballroom. Visitors sometimes also report other ghostly apparitions, including a spectral African Lion(!) roaming the halls, and the sound of ringing slot machines echoing from the hotel's distant and nefarious past as an illegal casino. Clayton House 514 N. 6th Street, Fort Smith One of Fort Smith's most opulent Victorian homes and a jewel of the city's Belle Grove Historic District, the Clayton House was originally constructed in the early 1880s as a residence for the family of prominent local resident William Henry Harrison Clayton, who served as chief prosecutor in the court of Fort Smith's famous "Hanging Judge," Isaac Parker. Whether it's due to the lingering presence of the Clayton family or some of the upset spirits of those outlaws Clayton helped send to Judge Parker's busy gallows is unclear, but visitors to the Clayton House have reported all manner of paranormal experiences over the years, including hearing the sounds of stomping boots and slamming doors from the second floor when no (living) person was upstairs. William Clayton's personal study is also apparently a hotbed of ghostly activity according to witnesses, who have reported sightings of a gray-haired older woman in a brown Victorian dress. Now fully restored to the way it appeared when Clayton and his family lived there, the house is operated through the Fort Smith Heritage Foundation and is available for rental. Pea Ridge National Military Park 15930 E Hwy 62, Garfield From Gettysburg to Vicksburg, Civil War Battlefields have long been seen as paranormal hotspots, which is probably understandable given the amount of suffering and death that happened there. While it wasn't the biggest battle fought in the Civil War, the Battle of Pea Ridge may have been one of its most consequential. Fought on March 7-8, 1862, the battle saw over 23,000 soldiers clash in the hilly pastureland of Northwest Arkansas in a conflict which historians agree was a turning point on the war's Western front. Today, the 4,300-acre battlefield is considered one of the most intact in the nation, and - if numerous witnesses are to be believed - that includes some of the 3,400 combatants who lost their lives there and possibly still linger there over a century after the muskets and cannons were stilled. Over the years, visitors have reported the sound of cannon fire and musket volleys in the night, along with the distant shouting of vast numbers of spectral soldiers. When it comes to making the future more sustainable, the move to electric cars is a leap America and the rest of the world will eventually have to make on a grand scale. For decades now, one of the main factors standing in the way of that future has been range: the distance an electric vehicle can travel before it must be recharged. In order for consumers to see electric vehicles as a reasonable alternative to vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, electric vehicle range will have to increase significantly, eventually rivaling or exceeding the range a fossil-fuel powered vehicle can travel on a single tank of diesel or gasoline. July 2019 was one for the history books for a lot of reasons, but two of our favorites reasons are: the debut of the all-new 2020 Corvette on July 18, and the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20. As plenty of Corvette fans know, there's another interesting connection between Corvette and the U.S. Space program, other than that near-conjunction of recent historical events. At the height of the Apollo program in the 1960s, Chevrolet made sure astronauts got to ride in style on terra firma through an innovative program that let astronauts lease new Corvettes for as little as $1 dollar per year. In addition to letting America's spacefarers blow off some steam while on earth, the program also gave Corvette a huge public relations boost. The connection between Corvette and NASA astronauts is a natural, with many astronauts being former fighter pilots who wanted to travel as fast on land as they had in the air. Chevy sealed the deal officially in 1962, when GM president Alan Shepard give a specially-prepared 1962 Corvette to astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, as a gift from the company. Up until then, it had been almost unheard of for Chevrolet to give away vehicles, even to heroes like Shepard, but the gift was the beginning of a partnership that would persist through the next decade. One hurdle to putting astronauts behind the wheel of flashy Corvettes was a U.S. Military policy that forbade astronauts from profiting from their fame by taking gifts or doing endorsements. Chevy cleverly got around this prohibition by instituting their famous "Dollar Car" program, which let astronauts and their families lease up to two new Chevrolet vehicles for $1 per year from a dealership in Melbourne, Florida, near the home of NASA. Most astronauts chose a sensible family car, but also a flashy new Corvette. As publicity for the Astronaut "Dollar Car" program grew, Chevrolet capitalized on the idea by offering astronauts specially-prepared and painted Corvettes. The three-man crew of Apollo 12, for example, were leased a trio of 1969 Corvette Roadsters with the 390 horsepower 427 big block engine. Originally Riverside Gold, the cars had a winglike black paint detail added to make them truly unique, along with red, white and blue logos as a salute to the crew's service. The Apollo 12 crew was later captured in an iconic photo in Life Magazine, sitting on top of their nearly-identical cars. Though the $1 lease program ended with the Apollo program in 1971, interest in astronaut-owned Corvettes has remained high. In 2007, a 1967 Corvette roadster originally owned by astronaut Gus Grissom, who died in a launchpad fire at Cape Kennedy in January 1967, sold at auction for $275,000. While today's astronauts have to pay retail for their Corvettes, the connection is still strong. Retired astronauts Scott Kelly and Mae Jemison were on hand in July to help introduce the 2020 Corvette. Last month, Chevrolet introduced the world to the next big thing in performance: the eighth-generation 2020 Chevrolet Corvette. The C8 'Vette is notable for a lot of reasons, but the biggest one is the location of the engine: unlike every production Corvette since all the way back to 1953, the 2020 Corvette will feature a mid-mounted engine, with a high-horsepower V8 stashed like a jewel under a glass engine cover just behind the two front seats. In addition to providing the 2020 Corvette with unparalleled balance and handling, the mid-engine configuration lets the C8 Stingray rocket from zero to 60 in around three seconds! That's fast! And with a starting price under $60,000, it's fairly affordable too, an an outright bargain in the overheated world of supercars. The road to the mid-engined Corvette was a long one, but Chevrolet has been hinting at aft power through their Corvette concept cars for decades. Read on for four Chevy concept Corvettes over the years that helped the Bowtie Brand work out the engineering and design architecture of the most revolutionary Corvette in over 65 years! 1960-61: CERV II In the history of Corvette, few names loom larger than Zora Arkus-Duntov, the engineering wizard who took 'Vette into the modern age of performance as Chevrolet's first high-performance director. In order to work out design problems, Chevrolet under Arkus-Duntov built test mules named CERV I and II, with the acronym standing for "Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle." Both CERV test mules were mid-engine, with powerful aluminum-block Chevy small-block engines mounted just behind the front seats and lightweight fiberglass bodies. Though Arkus-Duntov wanted to develop CERV II as a racing prototype to take on Ford's mighty GT40, changes in GM leadership put the project on ice. The CERV I and II, however, did give engineers an important early starting point for mid-engine 'Vette development. 1968: Chevrolet XP-880 (Astro II) Around the same time Arkus-Duntov's promising CERV II program was being shut down by GM brass, Corvette designer Larry Shinoda -- who was key to the design of the groundbreaking 1963 Corvette Stingray -- penned an equally-groundbreaking new design, known in-house as the Chevrolet XP-880. Later put on car show tours as the Astro II concept car, the graceful sports car drew heavily from the sinuous shapes being produced in Europe by makers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. Like those vehicles, the XP-880 was also mid-engine. Mounted just behind the front seats of the XP-880 was a thundering 7.0-liter 427 Chevrolet big block, with power sent to the rear wheels through a two-speed automatic transaxle from a 1963 Pontiac Tempest. The resulting car was a bullet, with test drivers achieving 1G cornering on the skidpad, in spite of the poor tire technology of the 1960s. Though the project was promising, it was eventually shelved, and became just another mid-engine Corvette what-could-have-been. 1970: XP-882 Another excruciatingly beautiful mid-engine Corvette concept car was introduced the year after the XP-880: the XP-882. Revealed at the New York Auto Show in April 1970, the XP-882 was mobbed by adoring crowds thanks to its sleek, futuristic looks, which recall the swoopy De Tomaso Pantera supercar. Low slung and wedge-shaped, with a beautiful louvered rear window that recalled the v-shaped rear glass of the beloved 1963-65 Corvette Stingray, the drop-dead gorgeous XP-882 was equally exciting to the Chevrolet sales department. The car looked to be on a fast-track to full-scale production in the 1970s, but Chevrolet General Manager John DeLorean -- who would later go on to fame and infamy as the man behind the DeLorean sports car -- killed the project because it would have required more expensive tooling, instead deciding to focus on a Corvette that shared the chassis with the Camaro. Though several of the design elements from the XP-882 were later adapted for the Camaro and production Corvette, the prototype is another mid-engine false start for Corvette. 1986: Corvette Indy With wedge-shaped fourth-generation Chevy Corvette all-new for 1983, Chevrolet was looking to give the motoring public a look at what was next for the Corvettes of the future, and it just doesn't get much more futuristic than the Corvette Indy concept car, which debuted at the 1986 Detroit Auto Show. Cutting edge in every way for its day, the Corvette Indy went for a slippery, curvaceous, Formula 1-inspired shape then preferred by European supercar builders, including the legendary Jaguar XJ220. Powering the Indy was a small-displacement powerplant mounted mid-ship: a high-revving 2.65-liter twin-turbo V8 delivering more than 600 horsepower at staggeringly high RPMS. The construction of the car hinted at future materials choices, too, with the body composed of then-rare Kevlar and carbon fiber, with a monocoque chassis inspired by high-end racecars and an all-wheel drive, four-wheel-steered suspension by racing legend Lotus. Though the concept was developed into the CERV III and was rumored to have almost made it to the production line, the car was eventually shelved and the world would have to wait another 30-plus years for the first mid-engine Corvette. With the eight-generation Chevrolet Corvette being introduced July 18, it's time to say goodbye to the last of the seventh-generation 'Vette models, and Chevrolet did the send-off up right for a good cause, auctioning off the final C7 Corvette for a record $2.7 million dollars. The proceeds will benefit a foundation that builds homes for gravely-injured military veterans. The final C7 Corvette, a black 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 convertible with a red interior that was donated free of charge by General Motors, sold at an auction hosted by storied collector car auctioneers Barrett-Jackson in Connecticut's Mohegan Sun Casino. When the hammer fell after a raucous back-and-forth bidding war, the car sold to an undisclosed buyer, with the final purchase price setting a world record for a vehicle sold for charity. The money will go to benefit the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation's smart homes program, which builds free, handicap-accessible homes for wounded U.S. Military veterans. The foundation, which is named after a New York City firefighter who died when the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11, also helps grieving families by paying off the mortgages of first responders killed in the line of duty. Since the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's smart homes program started, the charity has built or is in progress with the construction of 85 homes for injured veterans. The money raised from the sale of the last C7 Corvette will allow the charity to completely fund the construction of at least five more homes. "This is going to vibrate across America," said Frank Siller, chairman and CEO of the Stephen Siller Foundation. "This donation will build at least five homes for our catastrophically-injured veterans to give them their independence and a better quality of life." GM has supported the Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation for the past five years, with Chevrolet's sister brand GMC naming the foundation as their primary charity. In 2018, GM and Barrett-Jackson raised $925,000 for the charity by auctioning off the first production 2019 ZR1 Corvette, which was purchased by Chevrolet dealer and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick at the 2018 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. "It's appropriate that the most iconic vehicle ever built in the US, has the honor of being the highest auctioned vehicle at Barrett-Jackson for a charity," said Steve Hill, GM U.S. Vice President of Sales, Service and Marketing. "What makes me proud to be a GM employee is that fact that we've supported the military and veterans for over 100 years. This is a great evening, but tomorrow morning we get back to work to help more service members in need." The industry's first in-vehicle commerce platform, Marketplace debuted in December 2017 as an a free available app in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, allowing drivers to do things like pay for fuel without leaving their vehicle. The system is now available on over a million Chevrolet vehicles. To utilize the new partnership with Donimo's Pizza, drivers must set up a "Domino's Pizza Profile" on their in-vehicle touch-screen, setting their payment, delivery, carryout and pizza topping preferences for easy retrieval on the go. The system works entirely independent from the customer's mobile device, making it the first pizza-ordering option industry history. "Domino's has offered pizza lovers innovative ordering and delivery options for years. At the same time, Chevrolet put technologies in place that allows us to add capabilities to vehicles already on the road, like the ability for our drivers to order pizza through the touchscreen," said Scott Goddard, Marketplace line of business leader, Chevrolet. "This new in-vehicle solution is a natural collaboration that both Chevy drivers and pizza connoisseurs can enjoy."
