Five Pioneering Women from Arkansas March is Women's History Month, and Arkansas has been lucky enough over the years to have more than our share of great female political figures, artists, authors, musicians and more. While it's hard to pick a short list from the many women who have made their mark on the Natural State, we'll give it a shot. Seen below, check out our spotlight on five truly great women who helped guide not only Arkansas but America and the world. McLarty Daniel Chevrolet of Springdale is proud of these pioneers, and proud to celebrate their accomplishments. U.S. Senator Hattie Wyatt Caraway While it might be hard to believe Arkansas was so forward thinking so early, our state was the first in the nation to elect a woman to the U.S. Senate. Hattie Wyatt Caraway's husband, Thad Caraway, was the state's U.S. Senator until 1931, when he tragically died while in office. Hattie Caraway was nominated to fill out the remainder of his term, becoming the first woman to ever serve in the Senate, and when that term ended, she became the first woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate, where she served until 1945. In addition, she was the first female senior Senator and the first woman to chair a Senate Committee hearing. Long after her death in 1950, Caraway became the first female Arkansan ever to appear on a U.S. postage stamp in 2001. She is buried in Jonesboro. Sister Rosetta Tharpe Born Rosetta Nubin in 1915 near the tiny town of Cotton Plant, Sister Rosetta Tharpe learned about music and singing the way many Arkansans do: through her time spent in the church as a young girl, but also at the knee of her mother Kate Bell "Mother Bell" Nubin, who traveled from church to church in the Delta, singing. Through these early lessons, Tharpe developed both her prowess with several musical instruments, most notably guitar, and her unique singing style. Signed by Decca Records in 1938, Tharpe became an early gospel music superstar, with her passionate playing and singing influencing early Rock and Roll and many of the genre's most renowned artists, including Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Bob Dylan and scores of others. Thanks to her influence on several genres of music, Tharpe, who died in 1973, was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Maya Angelou Raised dirt poor in the tiny, south Arkansas town of Stamps, Maya Angelou did it all during her life, including working as a singer, driving a cab, starring in big-budget Hollywood movies and television shows and more. Her greatest fame, however, was as one of our nation's greatest writers and poets, with her works winning and nominated for literature's greatest prizes, including the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Her most famous work is the autobiographical novel "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," which has gone on to be lauded as both a classic of American Literature and an iconic work of African-American literature in particular. Many will remember her stirring reading of her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" at President Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993. She passed away in 2014. Helen Gurley Brown Raised in Little Rock after moving there from the small town of Green Forest, Arkansas, where she was born in 1922, Helen Gurley Brown worked as an advertising copywriter before hitting the big time in 1962 with the publication of her then-scandalous New York Times bestselling book "Sex and the Single Girl." The book launched Brown to both stardom and a status as a pioneer of a new and more forward-thinking movement about women and their place in the world. Promoted to the editor-in-chief of the famous Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1966, Brown pioneered the idea of "The Cosmo Girl," a freewheeling, unmarried-and-loving-it woman with her own money and her own ideas. Brown would go on to champion this idea in several other books, including 1982's "Having It All" and 2000's "I'm Wild Again." She passed away in 2012. Mary Steenburgen Few Arkansas actors have had a career to match that of Academy Award winner Mary Steenburgen. Born in Newport and raised in North Little Rock, Steenburgen made her first appearance on screen with a starring role in Jack Nicholson's 1978 film "Goin' South." Since then, Steenburgen has starred in a dozens of critically-acclaimed and box office smash films, including "Ragtime," "Parenthood," "The Butcher's Wife," "Step Brothers," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Philadelphia," "Back to the Future III" and many more. In 1981, she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in "Melvin and Howard." On the small screen, she has also starred in a number of critically-acclaimed shows, including "30 Rock," "Wilfred," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Joan of Arcadia" and several others. Married to TV icon Ted Danson, her career shows no signs of slowing, and she and Danson occasionally get spotted in Little Rock, where they own a home.

Chevrolet debuts totally redesigned 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban Since all the way back in 1936, Chevrolet Suburban has been helping Americans find their way to new adventures with a great mix of trucklike capability and interior cargo room and comfort, making it the longest-running continuously-used nameplate of any manufacturer. And for the last 25 years, the Chevy Tahoe has been the Suburban's shorter-wheelbase stablemate, with a winning blend of features and driveability. Three great events to enjoy at Arkansas State Parks in our area in January With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season quickly receding in the rearview mirror, we've all got to find ways to occupy ourselves between now and the first budding flowers of spring. Luckily for us here in Northwest Arkansas, January weather is fairly mild compared to many other areas of the country. Even better for us, we have an abundance of excellent Arkansas State Parks nearby where you can experience the unique natural splendor of deep winter in this beautiful place we call home. Getting out to events at our Arkansas State Parks is one of our favorite things to do here at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet. There's always something going on at the State Parks in our area, and the events are always informative and usually low-cost or free. JANUARY SPIRIT WALK Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park Amphitheater Saturday, January 18, 2020, 7-8 p.m. Admission: $5.00 Spooky stories aren't just fun in October! Following up on Prairie Grove Battlefield's popular and well-attended October "Spirit Walk" program is this event, which will take visitors on a chilly nighttime tour of some of the places where things are purported to go bump in the night at one of the most important Civil War battlefields in the state. Attendees will meet with historians at the Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park Amphitheater before a 1/2-mile, lantern-lit tour. At the conclusion of the walk, park interpreters will share their most memorable experiences with purported paranormal activity at the park around a campfire over warm cider. Due to some mature themes, this event is best suited to ages 12 and up, though smaller children can attend story and craft time at the Latta Barn while their parents are on the walk. Tickets must be purchased in advance by stopping by the battlefield's Hindman Hall Museum and Visitor's Center during operating hours. The event is limited to only 15 participants, so hurry and snap up a few before this in-demand event vanishes. Participants are encouraged to dress very warmly. EAGLE WATCHING CRUISE ON BEAVER LAKE 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, January 18 Rocky Branch Marina 8872 Rocky Branch Marina Road, Rogers Adults: $10.00 Children ages 6-12: $5.00 Few birds in North America are more beautiful than the Bald Eagle, and one of the best places in Arkansas to watch them in the wintertime is Beaver Lake, which hosts over 200 of the majestic birds. In this event, Hobbs State Park in Rogers hosts an eagle watching cruise to get you up close with these incredible creatures. Binoculars will be provided. The cruise leaves promptly at 3 p.m. from Rocky Branch Marina, so don't be late Beaver Lake hosts, on average, over 200 bald eagles during the winter. Join this interpretive tour as we try to find eagles and other wildlife along the shoreline. Binoculars are provided. A DOLLAR A DAY: THE CCC AT DEVIL'S DEN Devil's Den State Park Visitor's Center 11333 West Arkansas Highway 74 in West Fork Friday, January 17, 4-5 p.m. The Great Depression of the 1930s, which saw over 35 percent of American workers jobless and millions of others homeless or underemployed, changed the United States in ways big and small. The Works Progress Administration, spearheaded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, sought to ease the suffering of out-of-work Americans through a variety of programs that gave hardworking people homes, food, jobs and a sense of purpose. In Arkansas, one of the most important WPA programs was the Civilian Conservation Corps, which recruited young men to live and work on public projects. The CCC carved many of the Arkansas State Parks we still enjoy today out of the trackless wilderness, building roads, dams, bridges, cabins, lakes and shelters. That includes many of the structures still in use at Devil's Den State Park, which was built by the CCC in 1932. In this event, join park interpreters for a special discussion of the construction of Devil's Den State Park, including a video that explains the creation of the CCC and program's work all over America. Chevy debuts all-new 2021 Trailblazer From the all-new mid-engine 2020 Corvette to the incredible look of the 2020 Chevrolet SIlverado, the Bowtie Brand is just full of surprises these days. The latest surprise from Chevrolet: he all-new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV. Chevrolet recently released details and first photos of the 2021 Trailblazer and to say it is groundbreaking is an understatement. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1992) Halloween is second only to Christmas on our holiday hierarchy, so we find a lot to love in this stop-motion Christmas-Halloween crossover tale about hero Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, as and his spooky friends works to save Christmas and foil a plot to kidnap Santa Claus by a few of the dastardly villains. Conceived and produced by the legendary Tim Burton (though not, as many mistakenly believe, directed by Burton, who handed off those duties to Henry Selick), the result is a lush and beautiful vision of holidays colliding, with plenty to delight adults and kids alike. Die Hard (1988) Though it was originally released in balmy July and doesn't focus exclusively on Christmas, we're firmly in the camp of those who believe director John McTiernan's "Die Hard" is a "Christmas movie." It's a Christmas visit with his family, after all, that brings hard-boiled New York cop John McLane (iconically portrayed by Bruce Willis) to L.A., and a corporate Christmas party that gets taken over by a gang of thieves led by the villainous Hans (the late Alan Rickman, in another great performance). The movie that launched an entire genre of "trapped hero" flicks, not to mention the billion dollar "Die Hard" franchise, this action-packed story of a lone savior taking on ruthless mercenaries is one of the best movies of the 1980s, not to mention a great Christmas movie with real heart. The Polar Express (2004) Back in 2004, director Robert Zemeckis and star Tom Hanks took one of the most beautiful children's books of all time and turned it into a delight for the senses: "The Polar Express." A computer-animated film that's bound to restore even the most small-hearted Grinch's Christmas spirit, it's the tale of a boy whose faith in Santa is shaken until a mysterious train bound for the North Pole magically makes a stop in the street in front of his house on Christmas Eve. Building hugely on the bare-bones story of the book, the film goes from there to high adventure, with beautiful sights to behold. Though the now-15 year old motion-capture animation isn't quite up to 2019 standards, the story is still very magical and Hanks' performance as several crucial characters shows why he has plenty of Oscars to kick around. Elf (2003) Comedian and actor Will Ferrell is a national treasure, and a huge part of the proof of that is on display in 2003's "Elf," which took the story of an unlikely hero and turned it into an instant classic that will probably be a holiday favorite as long as films exist. It's the story of Buddy, who was taken in as an orphan by one of Santa's elf toymakers at the North Pole and raised to adulthood never knowing his background. Once he reaches adulthood, his adoptive father tells him the truth and at that point, Buddy sets off to New York City in search of his birthparents, setting up both a hilarious holiday comedy and one of the best fish-out-of-water tales in cinema history. More than just a one-trick gimmick film, "Elf" is a flick with real, true heart that's about finding the joy of where you are. That makes it one of the must-sees around here every Christmas season. Chevy unveils the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Colorado We've got gasoline in our veins when it comes to vehicles around here at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet of Springdale, and that's especially true when it comes to our beloved Chevys. This month brings a big update to one of our favorites, with Chevrolet releasing details on the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Colorado. The Colorado ZR2 4x4 gets an aggression boost to match its unmatched off-road capability, with an exclusive stencil-style cutout "CHEVROLET" grille, along with exclusive Multimatic DSSV position-sensitive dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, a factory two-inch lift, a 3.5-inch wider track, cab-protecting rock rails, cast iron control arms, multiple skid plates, and the rugged Autotrac transfer case. "We've sold 520,000 Colorado pickups in five years through a relentless, foot-on-the-gas approach to product and feature updates," said Bob Krapes, director of marketing, Chevrolet Trucks. "With its new-look front end and tailgate, Colorado will now have a more aggressive appearance to match its award-winning capability." Chevrolet debuts 450 hp, all-electric 'E-10' 1962 Chevy truck at SEMA While we all love the sound of a rumbling Chevy V8, the future belongs to alternative-fueled vehicles and electric cars. With a bold new custom vehicle appearing this month at SEMA, Chevy proves that electrified future doesn't have to mean settling for bland, boring trucks, SUVs and cars. Called the E-10 Concept, the truck started as a stock 1962 Chevrolet pickup. Heavily modified in every way possible, the heart of the E-10 is a prototype "electric crate engine," powered by readily-available battery packs from the Chevy Volt and producing big horsepower. Called "Connect & Cruise," the electric engine package is a glimpse of future commercial offerings Chevrolet hopes to someday sell to customers looking to convert their gasoline vehicles to all-electric power, allowing you to blend the cool styling of yesterday with the cutting-edge propulsion of today. "The Chevrolet E-10 electrified Connect & Cruise concept system reimagines the performance crate engine for hot rodders," said Jim Campbell, vice president of Performance and Motorsports. "As General Motors continues to work toward our vision of a zero-emissions world, concepts such as this help us get there, while still supporting the enthusiasts who love to drive vintage vehicles." The E-10's Connect & Cruise powerplant consists of two electric crate motors from Chevrolet Performance that replace the truck's original V8, along with two 400-volt batteries hidden beneath the truck's custom tonneau cover. Backed by a production-model Chevrolet SuperMatic automatic transmission, the engine delivers a dyno-tested 450 horsepower to the rear wheels, allowing the E-10 to rocket from zero-to-60 in just five seconds, while running the quarter mile in the high 13-second range -- enough to hang with a 2020 Chevy Camaro SS on the drag strip. "General Motors has the in-house talent required to create a concept like the E-10," said Campbell. "With the innovative thinking and expertise our performance team, electrification team and many others at GM bring, this project went from concept to running vehicle in 18 weeks to demonstrate what the future of an eCrate propulsion system and hot rodding could look like." To make sure the E-10 had that throaty, hot rod growl, the truck includes three speakers that emulate the sound of a V8 engine, with the difference being that you can choose between various engine sounds including the LS7 Z28 Camaro with track tuning, LS7 Z28 touring turning, a futuristic sound or silent. When turned on, the engine sounds will automatically adjust when the transmission shifts, mimicking exactly the sound of a gasoline powered vehicle. "The E-10 Concept builds on the experience and momentum generated by last year's eCOPO Concept, taking the idea of a 'crate' electric propulsion system further by leveraging actual production components," said Russ O'Blenes, director of Performance Variants, Parts & Motorsports. "It's all still in the testing stage, but this concept brings the electric option for hot rodders much closer to reality." In contrast to its next-gen power, the exterior of the E-10 goes Old School Hot Rod Cool, accentuating the classic looks of the C-10 pickup with custom modifications galore, a lowered stance, 20-inch alloy wheels up front and 22-inch wheels in back. Inside, the original interior has been upgraded with a digital display and leather-trimmed seats.
