“It Had To Be You,” by Frank Sinatra
Though the uber-romantic song “It Had to Be You” has been covered by crooners of all calibers, the tune was first recorded all the way back in 1924. The version by Frank Sinatra, however, is the classic, mostly thanks to Ol’ Blue Eyes’ rendition being included in the oh-so-romantic ending to the 1989 rom-com “When Harry Met Sally.” The perfect counterpoint to the film’s climactic scene — which we won’t spoil here! — the scene and the song get us sniffling every time.
“When a Man Loves a Woman,” by Percy Sledge
Another old favorite that has been covered by pretty much every soulful singer out there, from Michael Buble to Bette Midler, “When a Man Loves a Woman” was first recorded by the great R&B singer Percy Sledge back in 1966, with the sensuous lyrics about the lengths a man will go for the woman he loves helping the song rocket to the top of the Billboard 100. While it later turned out to be a huge hit again when Michael Bolton cut the tune in 1991, Sledge’s original rendition is still the ultimate version, and still soul-stirring in all the right ways.
“I Will Always Love You,” by Dolly Parton
Originally penned as Dolly Parton’s goodbye to her time with original duet partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, “I Will Always Love You” was a huge hit for Parton when it was released in 1974, but found new life when Whitney Houston recorded it for the top track on her film “The Bodyguard” in 1992. Houston’s version went straight to the top of the charts and stayed there for an incredible 14 weeks, becoming one of the biggest hits of her career. Whether you’re partial to Dolly or Whitney’s version, it’s still a love song superhit that speaks to the way we’ll always love those who once found a place in our heart.
“To Make You Feel My Love,” by Adele
Another love song that has been recorded by a laundry list of huge talents, “To Make You Feel My Love” was originally written by the great Bob Dylan for his 1997 album “Time Out of Mind,” but has since gone on to be a hit for everyone from Billy Joel to Garth Brooks to Kelly Clarkson. It is the soulful rendition by UK R&B sensation Adele that really rings our bells, however, with Adele’s smoky voice the perfect companion for this song about the lengths we’ll go to make those we love see our true feelings. Don’t it make you just want to kiss somebody?
“Crazy in Love,” by Beyonce
Though we’re clearly susceptible to the slow, sensual love songs, there’s always a place for burning passion on our playlist as well, which brings us to Beyonce’s red-hot 2003 hit “Crazy in Love.” Featuring Beyonce at her most ravenously untamed, with a hearty assist from her real-life husband Jay-Z, the song was the biggest hit off Bey’s debut album “Dangerously In Love” and has quite a bit of danger to it, as Beyonce careens through her rapid-fire ode to just how crazy passionate love can feel sometimes. Almost 20 years later, it’s still a lusty wonderland of a song.
Wherever you’re headed, going there with someone you love is sure to make every road trip better, as will the inclusion of any of these great, love-soaked hits on your road trip playlist. Need a great vehicle to get you to your love nest in style? Then stop in today for a test drive at McLarty Daniel Buick GMC, or check out our full selection at our website.
