The Body Electric: First-Ever Electric Chevy Silverado 1500

Last month General Motors President Mark Reuss announced Chevrolet will introduce a Silverado electric pickup truck that will be built at the company’s Factory ZERO assembly plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan. GM has made plans to deliver more than 1 million electric vehicles globally by 2025 and earn EV market leadership. It looks like GM is off to a great start!

ELECTRIC SILVERADO 1500

Welcome to the future! The Chevrolet Silverado electric full-size pickup is designed to be an EV, harnessing both the best of the Ultium Platform and Silverado’s proven capability. Ultium batteries are unique because the large-format, pouch-style cells can be stacked vertically or horizontally inside the battery pack. This allows engineers to optimize battery energy storage and layout for each vehicle design. The Ultium energy options range from 50 to 200 kWh, which could enable the electric Silverado to offer an estimated range of up to 400 miles or more on a full charge.

FACTORY ZERO

In early 2020, GM invested $2.2 billion in its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to produce a variety of all-electric trucks and SUVs. GM renamed the plant Factory ZERO, which reflects GM’s vision of a future with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. Factory ZERO is the beginning of GM’s multi-brand EV strategy. The facility has advanced technology and tooling and is designed with a focus on sustainable manufacturing. Factory ZERO, overall, received comprehensive upgrades, including new machines, conveyors, controls and tooling. The plant has expanded to over 4.5 million square feet.
