Chevrolet debuts 2021 Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle
Since 1997, when Chevrolet produced the first Chevy Tahoe Pursuit-Rated Package, law enforcement agencies all over America the world have come to rely on the Tahoe for many of the same reasons families do: great looks, terrific handling, rugged dependability, unmatched cargo room and unmatched performance.
Recently, Chevy took the wraps off the next Tahoe that will hit the beat alongside officers all across the country: the 2021 Chevy Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV). Loaded with features and conveniences developed in thousands of conversations with real-life officers and compiled by Chevy’s in-house Law Enforcement Product Council, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe PPV promises to be the best Police Tahoe ever when it debuts early next year.
“Tahoe is the most aspirational vehicle in the law enforcement industry,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, GM Fleet. “By listening to the needs of officers from around the country, we have built the best Tahoe ever.”
Looking to provide departments with a perfect blend of money-saving fuel economy and pursuit-ready power, the 2021 Tahoe PPV will be powered by Chevy’s rock-solid and reliable 5.3-liter V8, backed by a high-performance 10-speed automatic. To help the engine better survive the rigors of police life, it was treated to several innovative tricks, including the use of high-performance rocker covers from the ZL1 Camaro’s LT4 engine, which improve crankcase ventilation at high RPMs whole improving the engine’s ability to handle high-G turns without oil starvation in the engine’s internals. Engine oil and transmission fluid are also cooled by dedicated, heavy-duty fluid coolers, to help keep everything running smoothly even under extreme conditions.
To help keep officers safe during high-speed jaunts no matter what the weather, Chevy worked with their partner Bridgestone Tires to develop special rubber for the 2021 Tahoe PPV: Firestone Firehawk Pursuit tires, mounted to 20-inch steel wheels. Tested at well over 120 miles per hour at race tracks and the Chevrolet proving grounds, the tires improved the Tahoe PPV’s stopping distance by a full 11 feet when going from 60 mph to zero on dry surfaces.
Pursuit-Ready Performance Enhancements
Other pursuit-ready performance enhancements of the 2021 Tahoe PPV include:
- Tuned monotube dampers, coil springs and stabilizer bars for less body roll during high-speed turns.
- Lowering the ride height by three inches when compared to the civilian model 2021 Tahoe, for easier loading and unloading of handcuffed suspects, better aerodynamics, and a lower center of gravity.
- A heavy-duty braking system with high-performance Brembo six-piston aluminum monoblock calipers on massive 16-inch rotors.
- Heavy-duty limited slip rear differential.
- 140 mph speedometer
In addition, the electrical system of the 2021 Tahoe PPV has been optimized for easy lights/sirens/gear upfitting by departments, with a standard blunt-cut wiring harness with 31 wire circuits to the cockpit, 56 wire circuits to the cargo area and 25 shared circuits to connect equipment without removing major panels, seats or other components. In addition the Tahoe PPV includes steering-wheel-mounted buttons that can be easily configured to perform a variety of functions, from activating lights and sirens to activating an external speaker for addressing pedestrians.
To avoid excessive and fuel-hungry engine idling, the 2021 Tahoe PPV features a 760-amp auxiliary battery that allows video systems, radios, data terminals, emergency lighting and more to operate for an extended amount of time without the engine running. Keeping the system charged is a new high-output alternator is 47 percent more powerful than the 2020 model
