BASS REEVES MONUMENT
200 Garrison Avenue, Fort Smith
In the old west days, Fort Smith was the barely-contained border town that signified what amounted to law and order before the lawless Oklahoma Territory and points west, a place where outlaws held sway. One of the only men the baddies feared in those days was U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves. The first African-American U.S. deputy marshal west of the Mississippi, Reeves was a figure who struck terror into the hearts of outlaws, venturing out into the badland and bringing them back ten at a time, cuffed to his chuckwagon. His story is legend. This life-size bronze of Reeves on horseback stands as a monument to his courage and service to the cause of justice at a time when blacks were often seen as second-class citizens.

FT. CHAFFEE BARBERSHOP MUSEUM
7020 Taylor Street
If you know anything about the life of the King of Rock n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, you’re probably familiar with the fact that in March 1958, The King was inducted into the U.S. Army, before going off to serve his country during a stint in the military. Part of his induction into the service, shown in pictures published in newspapers around the world at the time, was Elvis getting his close-cropped G.I. haircut, with an Army barber possibly taking some pleasure in shearing off Elvis’ iconic pompadour so he could trade in his tight pants for Army Green like any other recruit. If you’re an Elvis fan or just love pop culture, no trip to Fort Smith is complete without a visit to the building on the former Ft. Chaffee where “the haircut heard round the world” took place.
