The Inside Scope: Tips on Getting the Best Price for Your Trade-In

Shhhhh….This is the overnight janitor at McLarty Daniel Chevrolet in Springdale. You can call me Mr. Andy Nymous. I’m on my break and thought I might get on this here ‘puter and type up some pointers to share about how to get the best price for your trade-in. The sales team don’t know about me spilling the beans. I just want to help out you hard-working folks!

Now, keep in mind that trading in your car won’t get you the highest price for it. Also, car dealers are constantly in search of good used cars to resell. This is just the beginning of a list of tips that I want to share to save you time and hassle. Consider these informative tips to get the best price possible on your trade-in. With a little research and some haggling, you might still get a fair price for your old car.

RESEARCH TRADE-IN PRICE

First, check online pricing guides like Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds. It’s important to accurately include all options, the correct mileage and the appropriate condition level. So no fibbing! Lastly, check sites such as Cars.com, Autotrader and CarGurus to compare what dealers are asking
for cars like yours.

CURB APPEAL

You want a clean machine before you take it to the dealership. At least wash and vacuum – you can even get it detailed – your car before getting trade-in quotes. Consider fixing scratches and other minor flaws and small dents, but it’s not all that necessary. Maybe view DIY videos on YouTube about how to take dents out or find a mobile paintless dent remover. Remove all your personal items from the interior and the trunk.

TRADE-IN QUOTES

First, stop by McLarty Daniel Chevrolet so we can give you a healthy trade-in quote. But you can drive to at least three dealerships to get written trade-in quotes. This will provide leverage when it comes time to negotiate. We also suggest presenting maintenance records and a vehicle history report to strengthen your position.

KEEP ‘EM SEPARATE

Like washing white and colored clothes, keep the trade-in and purchase negotiations separate. Then check each price against online guides and the cash offers you received. Once your salesperson agrees on a trade-in price, ask for it in writing.

SALES TAX

In Arkansas, you pay sales tax only on the difference between the allowance on your old car and the sale price of the new one when trading in. For example, if your trade is valued at $8,000 and you buy a $20,000 car, you pay sales tax on $12,000. Click on the link above for more tax information.

VERIFY

After negotiating the terms for your new vehicle and reviewing the contract, verify that you’re given the agreed-upon price for your trade-in.

Well, I better wrap it here. My break is almost over and it’s almost morning. The McLarty Daniel sales team will soon be coming in for the workday.
